SCHALLER
The
Schaller branch of First Cooperative Association
had five different elevator companies before
Farmers Grain Company took over in 1930. In
the fall of 1963, the directors of the Farmers
Grain Company made it known that their interests
in the elevator were for sale. Several meetings
were held to discuss the possibilities of starting
a coop elevator. In March of 1964, the former
Farmers Grain Company became known as the Schaller
Coop Elevator. Agland Coop came about in June
of 1974, when the Schaller Coop Elevator and
the Alta Elevator merged.
The cement elevator was built in 1907, and had
a storage capacity of 42,000 bushels in sixteen
different bins. It was the largest elevator
along this railroad at that time. The railroad
was abandoned in 1975.
The feedmill at Schaller was built in 1966,
with the capacity of 80 tons a day. The NH3
bulk tank, with a 40 ton capacity, was added
in 1987. In 1965, the Chicago dryer was put
in and the Kan-Sun dryer was added in 1970.
Both have a drying capacity of 500 bushels per
hour. A 5,000 bushel leg, 10,000 bushel bin
and a 35,000 bushel bin were built in 1978.
A 50,000 bushel bin was built in 1980, a 100,000
bushel bin was built in 1985, and a 100,000
bushel bin was built in 1993. A 300,000 bushel
bin and a 10,000 bushel leg were built in 1997.
Total Schaller grain capacity is 647,000 bushels.
In August of 1998, a building, 30 ft. by 80
ft. was moved from Larrabee to Schaller. The
East half is heated for chemicals and shop,
and the West half is used for a warehouse.
