CHEROKEE
The
Cherokee branch of First Cooperative Association was acquired
in 1949 from Lloyd Darling and is located on Main Street. It
also organized with Cleghorn in 1949, for a purchase price of
$30,000.00. In 1989, the Farmers Coop of Cleghorn and Cherokee
entered in the merger of First Farmers Coop with Marcus and
Larrabee. Not without its share of problems.
Services offered are: Bagged storage, grain storage and drying.
In 1979, the property at River Road was acquired, and construction
of the cement elevator began in 1980. Farmers in Cleghorn area
didn’t figure the elevator would ever get full. Much to everyone’s
surprise, it filled with soybeans.
The cement elevator was built in 1980, with four bins, 60,000
bushel each, three bins, 20,000 bushel total, two bins, 3,400
bushel each. 274,400 bushel storage in the elevator. It has
2, 7,000 bushel per hour legs, and 2, 650 bushel pits. We have
a rail load out with a capacity to load 15 cars at 15 minutes
per car. The conveyor was replaced in 1995. In 1995 a 212,000
bushel Butler bin was built. It has 2, 20hp fans. Construction
cost was $246,110.00. This structure was built to accommodate
additional structures. In 1967, an 18,000 bushel bin used for
soybean storage was built at the old elevator site. It was later
moved to this facility. The Deluxe grain dryer was purchased
and installed the same year. It was used when installed.
The Cherokee location is operated with 2 employees.
